3 Ways to Get Rid of Cockroaches this Winter

Winter is here, but are you prepared to defend your Rhode Island home and family from an impending cockroach infestation? They could be German cockroaches, which are around 1/4 inch long, or reddish-brown American cockroaches, which can grow up to 1-2 inches.

No matter what kind of roach population is ready to move in, any roach infestation spells one idea across any homeowner's mind: get rid of roaches!

Maybe you've seen their egg cases, or perhaps you've fought against German roaches and it's still not working. Well, maybe some of our solutions will help!

Home Techniques to Control Cockroaches

1. Entry Point Reduction

Cockroaches are in constant search of food sources. They eat anything from the things humans eat to the more disgusting things: blood, human feces, toenails and fingernails, dandruff, other insects, their own molts. You name it, they probably eat it. In fact, some sources indicate that termites are most likely descendants from ancient-day cockroaches that somehow turned into wood-digesting colonies, (but don't worry, cockroaches today don't eat wood).

The most common cracks and crevices roaches use to enter your home include the cracks around doors, windows, and sill plates, the gaps around utility pipes, ripped or broken window screens, drainpipes and gutters. Use silicone caulking and copper mesh to close every opening you can find.

It's impossible to find every possible entry location, but stay vigilant and don't give up!

2. Clean, clean, clean!

Cockroaches are scavengers, so they'll eat anything and everything we do, and they can go months without food. You could find a roach hiding inside a loaf of bread or grocery bag or nibbling on leftovers. They also eat dandruff, toenails, fresh or dried blood, dead skin fallen on the ground, human feces, and a bunch of other nasty stuff.

That's why it's vital to make sure they don't have anything to eat. Seal your food in airtight containers and on a high shelf that's hard to reach because roaches might be able to climb, but don't make it easy for them. Sweep the floor before and after meal preparation and before and after you've eaten, wash the dishes right away and never leave them on the table or in the sink, and never eat food anywhere other than in the kitchen.

You're not likely to find roaches out in the open because they are extremely vigilant and cautious, so you'll have to look for their hiding places and scrub it down. In the kitchen, locate them under, behind, or around all appliances, including the stove, oven, refrigerator, toaster, microwave, mixer, bread maker, toaster oven, blender, and food processor. Clean each of these items thoroughly after each use to make sure no food particles remain on them.

In bedrooms and other places in the house, look for signs of them under carpets and rugs, in the junction between the floor and wall, in drawers and inside drawer runners, under and behind furniture. Use grease-fighting soap when you can and vacuum often.

If you know about an infestation in your house, regular and vigorous sanitation will only improve the situation. This will prevent the cockroaches from hiding and staying alive, breeding, and laying eggs.

3. Cockroach Elimination Solutions

There are several effective ways to kill roaches, but their populations explode so quickly, it's best to use a product for massive cockroach casualties in the battle for your sanity.

Numerous over-the-counter products are available for you to use against cockroaches:

Grease-fighting Dish Soap | This one is great to use as a kill-on-contact solution for when you see them crawling around. Mix dishwashing soap with water in a spray bottle and use it against them when you find them scurrying somewhere. WD-40 is also an excellent solution against anything with an exoskeleton, but dish soap is significantly less expensive.

Boric Acid is a chemical commonly used in various household products and can be purchased at your local hardware store location. This chemical usually comes in a dust form that you sift over a spot where cockroaches commonly appear or where you wish to prevent cockroaches from coming. However, be careful when you apply it. Children, pets, and the elderly can react poorly to boric acid, so be careful not to cause them harm.

Diatomaceous Earth is also an excellent way to kill anything with an exoskeleton because the earth attaches to the roach and sucks them completely dry, which will eventually kill them by dehydration. Think of it as the roach version of glass and kitty litter that sucks them completely dry and cuts them up; however, be aware that the cockroaches may learn to avoid the diatomaceous earth and that cockroaches can require anywhere between ten days to three weeks to die of dehydration.

Gel bait and bait stations are an excellent roach pesticide because cockroaches are smart enough to avoid dust piles of boric acid, but gel bait kills them much more slowly and is an attractive and tasty treat. When they discover a pile of bait, they eventually take an interest in it and eat it, thinking they've gotten away with a delicious snack, but every roach that eats the bait will ultimately die. The solution can require a longer wait to take full effect, but it is an effective roach insecticide.

Insect Growth Regulators are a type of insecticide that prevents roaches from growing to sexual maturity, which will stop a roach population from growing any larger. You can purchase these on the internet or farm and garden supply stores, some hardware stores, or even the mall.

We had a wonderful experience with our technician. Weston was easy to talk to and explained everything well. Josh, who sold us the service, was very kind also. Not pushy at all. And very informative. Thank you. We look forward to working with you in the future.
