4 Ants To Watch For This Spring

Few pests are as big a problem for homeowners around the world as the ant. They’ve found their way onto every continent except Antarctica and survive in every climate, including the North Pole! At best, ants are a nuisance for homeowners, but at worst, they can damage property, contaminate food and can bite or sting, or both!

These are four of the most common kinds of ants you might see in and around your home this spring, along with some things you can do to protect yourself from them.

1. Pavement Ants

True to their name, the pavement ant is typically found in pavement cracks or rocks around the home. If they wander their way into your house, they can be extremely annoying and difficult to eradicate

Luckily, pavement ants typically respond well to efforts to get rid of them. Two things that prevent them from coming inside in the first place is sealing all your food, including pet food, in airtight containers and sealing obvious cracks and crevices of your home, like gaps around utility and A/C pipes, cracks along the foundation, gaps under and around doors and windows, and window wells.

You can also prevent ants from coming inside by cleaning your home frequently. Ants aren’t attracted to grime and dirt, but it’s harder for them to stay in the house if their hiding places are constantly being cleaned. And cleaning also prevents them from finding any edible particles lying around.

2. Odorous House Ants

Just like their name implies, these ants emit a nasty smell when they are crushed. Like most other ants, they are also omnivores looking for anything from sugary foods to grease or meat.

These ants are much more difficult to eradicate than pavement ants because they have hundreds or even thousands of queens and frequently divide into hundreds of sub-colonies. If even one reproductive queen gets away, the entire colony could eventually restart itself.

Because they’re incredibly well-adapted to living inside our homes, house ants tend not to respond as quickly to home remedies and products as pavement ants, so involving the professionals early can make a big difference in the treatment process.

3. Crazy Ants

These long-legged creatures get their name from the twitchy way they walk while looking for food. Unlike other ants that are chemically forced to stay in line while searching for food, crazy ants have the ability to leave the chemical paths leading to new food sources and wander off on their own.

Crazy ants also get their name from their incredible habit of getting tangled in electrical wiring. They can destroy things like TVs, radios, laptops or desktop computers, and even toasters.

Despite the colony’s ability to support hundreds of egg-laying queens and grow in size reaching the millions of ants, these ants can remain undetected inside the walls.

4. Carpenter Ants

Because of their massive jaws that carve through wood, these are probably the most destructive of all ant species. Even though they don’t eat the wood as termites do, carpenter ants can still cost homeowners thousands of dollars in home repairs.

Unlike the other kinds of ants mentioned above, carpenter ants only have one queen, but they’re no easier to eradicate. Under normal circumstances, the main colony stays with the queen outside the home while a sub-colony of workers with eggs and larvae attacks the home, carving out wood and scavenging for food inside the house.

Carpenter ants differ from other ants that come inside homes mainly in size. While most house-invading ants are about 1/8 inch long, carpenter ant workers are normally about 1/2 inch long.

What’s the Difference Between Carpenter Ants and Termites?

  • Ants have a thin waist. Termites have a thick waist.
  • Ants have an elbow bend in their antennae. Termite antennae are straight.
  • When they have wings, ants have four wings of two different lengths, and termites have four wings of equal length.

How to Get Rid of Ants

Many homeowners try to get rid of ants on their own, but many spend a lot of time and energy to get rid of them without getting the desired results. Even though products like diatomaceous earth and insecticide soap can help, the best way to eradicate ants for good is to call the professionals.

We had a wonderful experience with our technician. Weston was easy to talk to and explained everything well. Josh, who sold us the service, was very kind also. Not pushy at all. And very informative. Thank you. We look forward to working with you in the future.
